100 Book Challenge
This year, our classroom will participate in 100 Book Challenge. Your child will be doing lots of reading in school and at home. The reason for this program is simple: Research shows that students who read for one hour every day, from books that they can read and want to read, have a much better chance for success in school and beyond. The more time your child spends reading at his or her independent level, the better reader he or she will become.
An independent reading level is the level at which a child can read a text on his/her own with ease. The child makes hardly any errors when reading the text and has excellent comprehension of the story. ... An instructional reading level is the level at which a child needs the support of a teacher, parent, or tutor. Your child will read books at both levels during school hours.
We need your help! Every night your child will bring home books at a high success independent level. Your child should read for at least 150 minutes per week. When she or he does, please sign the Book Log that I provided. Use this time to sit with your child as the home reading coach. The reading should be fun, fast, and easy. It should not be a struggle.

Social Studies
We are able to integrate much of the Social Studies curriculum within our Language Arts Curriculum. The social studies focuses on theme of citizenship, neighborhoods, and community to name a few. We use globes and maps that help the students to apply much of what they are learning to real life situations. These themes are then carried on into our reading books through out the year.
WIN (What I Need - formally known as Response to Intervention)
For all students at RES we use a system of differentiated instruction called WIN - What I need. For 30 minutes each day in both reading and math our instruction is based on the specific student skills necessary to be successful with the grade level curriculum. The number of students in each skill group is determined by the needs of the students. These skill groups are fluid and students move between groups as necessary to meet their personal strengths and weaknesses.

Science
The Science Curriculum is designed around three specific Smithsonian kits. These kits give students the opportunity to learn science using hands on techniques while conducting their own experiments first hand. Skills are taught and built on so by the end of the kit the “Big Idea” has been mastered. The three kits that the second grade students will be using are: Insects, Soils and Bridges.
Flight
I was trained a few years ago in flight through the Delaware Aerospace Educational Foundation. I have had the opportunity to teach our students the principles of flight and then integrate their learning on an actual Flight Simulator!! The simulator is donated by Boeing and will be at our school for a total of three weeks for our students to use, to learn the principles of flight and to apply their skills to actual simulator flying.
